General Summary

The Store Manager is responsible for keeping the store’s day-to-day operations moving smoothly. This role is a critical piece of operations, allowing the individual store to succeed and ensuring upper management can appropriately delegate responsibilities. The Store Manager is responsible for stock control, human resources, customer management, and assisting upper management with strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

Day-to-Day Operations

  • Keep the sales floor clean, stocked and presentable
  • Design and execute sales displays such as tabletop seasonal displays or new products
  • Suggest changes to the floor layout when necessary
  • Update price tags and ensure all products are properly priced
  • Instruct staff on restocking
  • Maintain the stock area and keep inventory organized
  • Check online orders to be shipped and track in-store pickup orders.
  • Verify cash counts and confirm till open/closing
  • Ensure large orders for bazaars, etc. are prepared for pickup or delivery
  • Manage production of gift baskets and special orders such as deli trays

Human Resources

  • Manage staff scheduling. Prepare shift schedules and log absences, vacation time, and other scheduling issues. Record hours for payroll.
  • Work with upper management on staffing. Suggest when staffing may be insufficient. Join in hiring interviews and make hiring recommendations.
  • Lead training of new staff
  • Address staff HR concerns when present. Refer concerns to upper management. Inform management of any significant issues, up to and including firing recommendations. Refer staff to management for disciplinary action when necessary
  • Ensure health and safety compliance

Inventory Control

  • Prepare for and physically receive stock deliveries.
  • Enter received products into the POS for inventory.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy through receiving, managing spoilage, inventory counts and adjustments
  • Keep track of inventory expiry dates. Rotate products properly. Put out-of-date products on clearance or suggest promotions. Dispose of damaged or unsalable products and record inventory changes accurately.

Ordering

  • Manage weekly orders for the deli & bakery from CMP, Roos Meats, Van Straten, and Eastway.
  • Track stock and order from Scheps Bakery and Kroes Croquettes as needed
  • Make ordering recommendations including products to add if possible and products to discontinue
  • Review the sales of products and report insights to upper management

Customer Service

  • Maintain positive relationships with customers
  • Answer customer questions and collect feedback
  • Refer customers to upper management for concerns or advanced questions
  • Collect customer requests and ensure proper management of customer orders such as cake orders or layaways
  • Work with schools and charities on large-scale purchases. Prep bazaar and auction items.

Qualifications & Expectations

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Passionate drive and a commitment to the success of The Dutch Shop and the care of our community
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail, particularly math and financial information
  • Capable computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Excel
  • A comprehensive understanding of Dutch grocery products, Dutch food culture and customer expectations.

Working Conditions

  • This role requires frequent mobility and flexibility. Regular physical requirements of all staff apply as well.
  • The Store Manager is provided a semi-private office area with a computer and storage.
  • Computer-based tasks such as POS receiving and stock ordering may be done remotely.
  • The Store Manager is assumed to be available at all times during work hours unless otherwise stated and must maintain active communication with upper management
  • Work hours are not to exceed 40 per week. Some weekend work is expected, particularly during the holiday season.
